To start with, the city is absolutely gorgeous and lives up to the Swiss stereotypes that we, North Americans, have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tidiness.<br>Efficiency.<br>Symmetry.<br>Cleanliness.<br>And just utterly&nbsp;beautiful scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These clich\u00e9s, for better or for worse, are all true. But more than just a pretty face, the cosmopolitan city surprised me in many ways with its dynamism and effervescence, something I didn&#8217;t quite expect from this notoriously homogeneous German-speaking city. I had only planned for 48 hours in Zurich because I flew SWISS&#8217;s new direct route from Montreal before going on an epic pan-European adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>#kt-layout-id_c5e056-ed > The city is very picturesque, and its centre is filled with winding cobblestone streets, each more photogenic than the last. I especially loved my early morning and&nbsp;evening strolls&nbsp;when the streets are virtually deserted. I felt like I had Zurich all to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the Swiss National Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the most important art museums of cultural history in Europe,\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalmuseum.ch\/e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swiss National Museum<\/a> showcases the most significant\u00a0events of the last 20 centuries, from\u00a0prehistory to\u00a0ancient times and the Middle Ages,\u00a0with\u00a0a particularly\u00a0rich section focused on Gothic art and chivalry. Bonus points &#8211; the museum itself is a magnificent work of art, with dozens of towers and courts. Make sure to take a photo or two from\u00a0Platzspitz\u00a0Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zuerich.com\/en\/visit\/your-city-travel-pass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The ZurichCARD <\/a>is very good value at just CHF 27 for 24 hours or CHF 53 for 72 hours. The hotel in which the restaurant is located, the luxurious Widder Hotel, is the 700-year old headquarters&nbsp;of the&nbsp;Widder Zunft (Zurich&#8217;s&nbsp;historic butchers&#8217; guild) &#8211; which explains the subtle and clever touches&nbsp;of traditional butcher items inside the restaurant, from the decor itself to the waiter&#8217;s outfits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: if weather permits during your 48 hours in Zurich, have your meal al fresco. And whatever you do, don&#8217;t skip the beef tartare &#8211; one of the best I ever had. And I&#8217;ve had lots of beef tartare in my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Admire the view from atop Grossm\u00fcnster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly, this is one of the most iconic things to do during your 48 hours in Zurich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I blame it on jetlag, but for some reason, I got the time wrong and arrived at Grossm\u00fcnster an hour late (hence the lack of photo evidence). Try to snag a table outdoors if you have the chance, as their patio is one of the best people-watching spots in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have lunch at Hiltl,&nbsp;the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A little bit of veggies never hurt anyone &#8211; especially not in Switzerland, where traditional fare tends to be more on the heavy side. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiltl.ch\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hiltl<\/a> was founded in 1898 and has been serving the best vegetarian buffet&nbsp;in Zurich&nbsp;ever since, now under the watchful eye of the fourth generation of Hiltl. More than just a trendy neighbourhood, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.im-viadukt.ch\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Viadukt<\/a> is an ode to creativity and architecture seeing as its shops and restaurants are housed inside the arches&nbsp;of the disused, 550-feet long railway viaduct. It still feels like a very effervescent, constantly evolving space that I bet will look different when I visit again this September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viadukt a pretty good introduction to Zurich-West, actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Factories have been transformed into theatres, shipyards are now art galleries, mills currently house pop-up shops. Indeed, art, design, food, culture, shopping and architecture are now the center of attention in this former industrial zone &#8211; especially at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freitag.ch\/media\/stores\/zurich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freitag flagship store<\/a> (iconic bags produced from recycled materials taken from the streets &#8211; you&#8217;ve surely seen them before, just about every bike messenger in the world owns one), which is housed inside a structure formed by&nbsp;17 freight containers piled one on top of the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indulge with Swiss fondue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/P4200456-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25785\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/P4200456-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/P4200456-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/P4200456-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/P4200456.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to come up&nbsp;something more original than fondue (such a clich\u00e9, amirite) but there simply is no such thing as going to Switzerland and not indulge in this iconic meal. Period. Although most Swiss you will meet will rebuff at the idea of eating fondue when&nbsp;there&#8217;s no snow on the ground, tourists are allowed to infringe this unspoken rule.
