{"id":7589,"date":"2014-03-09T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T12:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eurotriptips.com\/?p=7589"},"modified":"2018-04-28T10:31:21","modified_gmt":"2018-04-28T14:31:21","slug":"rouen-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/rouen-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"The Medieval City of Rouen &#8211; In Photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My itinerary from my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/tag\/auvergne\/\">home region of Auvergne<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toeuropeandbeyond.com\/tag\/normandy\/\">Normandy<\/a> had me in need of a pit stop roughly two hours outside of Paris; but being short on time, I didn&#8217;t want to spend unnecessary time in dormant suburban cities with nothing to do besides fueling up. And then I found Rouen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unbeknownst to me, Rouen is actually one of the most visited and photographed cities in France. I quickly found out why:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Pierre Corneille, one of the most famous French playwrights, was born in Rouen.<\/li>\n<li>Rouen was the inspiration behind a good dozen of Claude Monet&#8217;s paintings.<\/li>\n<li>Although her heritage wasn&#8217;t as historically significant as the others in this list, Julia Child is said to have eaten her first authentic French meal at La Couronne restaurant.<\/li>\n<li>Gustave Flaubert wrote the famous Madame Bovary in this very town.<\/li>\n<li>Last but not least, Place du Vieux March\u00e9 is where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in the 1400s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What surprised me the most is how lavish the centre of Rouen is. The main city square, Place du Vieux March\u00e9, has some of the best-preserved timber-frame buildings I&#8217;ve seen in all of France, and the city&#8217;s many churches are fine examples of Gothic architecture. How could this modest city in Northern France hold so many underrated treasures?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rouen Photos &#8211; Place du Vieux-March\u00e9<\/h2>\n<p><img justify;\">Rouen Photos &#8211; Quaint Streets &amp; Buildings<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After some research, I discovered that Rouen was considered to be France&#8217;s second city for quite some time. It actually was one of the most prosperous cities of Europe, as\u00a0it was the seat of the\u00a0Exchequer\u00a0of\u00a0Normandy\u00a0in the Middle Ages. This title meant that Rouen\u00a0was one of the capitals of the\u00a0Anglo-Norman\u00a0dynasties, which ruled both England and large parts of modern France between the 11th and the 15th centuries. Hence the city&#8217;s\u00a0sumptuously rich\u00a0architectural and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full sights of Rouen, and not having known about them beforehand.
